Tonemes do not depend upon double articulation, but have a crucial and central place in verbal communication. Using prosodie elements in the right way is as important as the correct articulation of phonemes in enunciational discourse. If a person learning a foreign language is not acguainted with the usage of the prosodemic elements, he may not understand the intended information. Consequently, verbal communication does not occur either at the reception or production level. Prosodie elements are usually put aside in the teaching of French in Turkey and adequate importance is not attached to them; however, segmental units can be said to existing in prosodie units. On the other hand, whether in the production or reception level prosodie and segmental units are closely intertwined. For this reason, by examining the functional roles of the basic intonation types of French in enunciational discourse from a linguistics and semantics point of view, we searched the intonemes defining meanings to make the teaching of this language's intonation system easier to Turkish people. Generally speaking, the proper use and acquisition of these prosodie elements of thş intonation system remains one of the most difficult stages in foreign language learning.
