During his research in Topkapı Palace Library in 1940's Outstanding Professor Süheyl Ünver came across a notebook containing various drawings and "tughra"s (sultan's signature elaborately inscribed on official documents) that belonged to Mehmed II. it was seen from the front and back covers of the notebook that it had been rebound at the time ofAbdulhamid II and that because of cutting some of the pictures from below, the size of the pages had been reduced. It Is considered that some possible notes could have been thrown away by some ignorant people during the bookbinding process.Brought up in Edirne Palace, Mehmed II was in a multilingual and multicultural environment and became interested in the culture of Antiquity and Western Art starting from his days as a prince. His interest took on a new dimension with the artists he invited ftom Italy. Mehmed II, whose talent in arts had been proved by his successful poetry and Divan he wrote, might have developed his interest by the arts instruction he received from professional Renaissance artists. His works that mainly emphasize human figures and character reflections of the faces still retain their mystery today.
