The purpose of the research is to identify the main problems students face in their freshman year at university. The study also tries to pinpoint the kinds of counseling and guidance services they would like to benefit from. Adaptation to university life as perceived by the students is examined in relation to several variables. The study was conducted with 311 first year students from different departments of Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education. University Life Scale (ULS) was utilized for determining the adjustment levels and a set of questions were used to collect the demographic data. When participants were asked to list the problem areas which they were faced with in the first days of their university life, they mostly marked the economic problems and registrative issues. Participants were also asked to choose which psychological services they would prefer to receive. Their answers indicate that academic success, career planning finding job, communication skills, social anxiety-assertiveness, coping with stress, motivation, problem solving, time management, anger control, conflict resolution were among the most preferred services for these students. Grade point average (GPA) and adaptation to university, academic adaptation and social adaptation levels were correlated positively. In terms of socio-economic conditions, upper class ULS points on diverse dimensions were significantly higher than lower class points. Regarding the findings of the research, some guidelines are proposed about guidance and counseling programmes in higher education.
