The purpose of this study is to find out the motivational strategies given importance and used by the Turkish teachers of English in both pubtic and private primary schools. A questionnaire consisting of 30 strategies was given to 210 teachers in 18 public and 14 private schools. The analysis of data showed that there was no statistical difference between the teachers working in public and private schools in terms of how important they considered the motivational strategies. However, there were statistically significant differences (p<.05) between the groups in terms of their use of the strategies related to the interest of the learners, familiarizing the learners with target language culture, group work and displaying the students' products.
