THE EFFECT OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY COURSE ON PRESERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF NATURE OF SCIENCE

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of science technology society course on preservice science teachers’ perceptions of nature of science. The study was conducted with 30 preservice science teachers enrolled to Science Technology and Society course during the spring term of 2011-2012 academic year. To examine the effect of Science, Technology and Society course on preservice science teachers’ perceptions on nature of science, VOSTS questionnaire were given to 30 preservice science teachers before and after the application. During 12 weeks of intervention, preservice science teachers were informed about contemporary information and socio-scientific dimensions on the basic subjects of science. Data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 statistical programme. The results show that STS course has a significant role in developing preservice sicence teachers’ perceptions of some dimensions of NOS (e.g. tentaviness, subjectivity, empirically based, observation and inferences, imagination and creativity, social and culturel embeddedness).
