ACCEPTABILITY AND INTELLIGIBILITY OF SENTENCES WITH DEFECTIVE EXPRESSIONS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY THROUGH STUDENT READERS

The aim of this research is to investigate the sentences which are asserted as defective in different categories according to intelligibility and acceptability criterion. Study group of the research is composed of secondary and high school last year students in the center of Burdur and Nigde, Mehmet Akif Ersoy University and Nigde University senior students in 2013-2014 academic year. A measurement tool has been employed to the study group which was developed by researchers. This measurement tool was developed basing on the scientific works in the literature and it consists of seven main categories. 3 samples, which were qualified as defective expressions belonging to these categories were selected from the literature. Thus, a measurement tool consisting of 21 items (sentences) was obtained. This tool measures both acceptability and intelligibility of 21 items with defective expression. The data collected were analyzed and classified according to seven major categories and presented as numerical values and percentages. According to findings obtained from research data, it is seen that the sentences with defective expressions in seven categories were all found acceptable and intelligibility with high percentage and also accurately comprehended by participant students.
