This study was conducted to compare academic achievement scores of the first year students of the Faculty of Education on the general, pedagogical courses and departmental courses, in terms of the high school types from which these students graduated. The sample of the study comprises all the first-year students of Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education of Istanbul University in the 2005-2006 academic year. The analysis of 535 students' files has revealed that the 25.8% of the students graduated from "Anatolian Teacher High Schools", 20.4% from "Anatolian High Schools", 18.5% from "General High Schools", 18.1% from "Foreign Language High Schools", 6.9% from "Private High Schools" and 10.3% graduated from other other types of high schools. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) results with respect to the academic achievement on pedagogical courses indicated that the cumulative grand point average (CGPA)scores of the students graduated from Anatolian Teacher High Schools were significantly lower than the scores of the students who are the graduates of other high school types and significantly lower than Foreign Language High School students although those students attended the teaching training courses in their secondary education. In terms of the departmental courses, the students from Anatolian Teacher High Schools scored significantly lower than the students from other high school types. Besides, the scores of the students from Anatolian Teaching High Schools on general courses were significantly lower than the scores of Foreign Language High School students. Even more significantly, the graduates of the Anatolian Teacher High Schools who have already covered a great number of pedagogical courses during their high school education did not achieve any better than the graduates of other schools and they were found to be significantly less successful than the Foreign Language Schools in terms of academic achievement. When the achievement of Anatolian High School graduates on subject area courses were analyzed, it was found that these students' achievement levels were significantly lower than the achievement of the graduates of Anatolian, Foreign Language, General and Private High Schools. The study also revealed that the academic achievement of the graduates of Anatolian Teaching High Schools on certain common mandatory courses such as Turkish Language and Principles of Atatürk and the History of Turkish Revolution were significantly lower than those of the graduates of Foreign Language High Schools.
