The recent developments in educational technologies necessiates the application of contemporary approaches like learning autonomy in the field of foreign language learning and teaching. In addition, the development of open and distance learning technologies makes the learner autonomy necessary. By diversifying and enlarging the foreign language learning and teaching choices for teachers, course designers and learners the Internet and virtual learning environments changes learning opportunities. Moreover, the knowledge which booms with the support of learning webs like the Internet and virtual learning environments multiplies and diversifies the knowledge that the learners are required to learn. These require learners to choose among the knowledge to be acquired and take proactive responsibility in learning. Virtual learning environments like Second Life may provide many new opportunities in the context of foreign language learning. In the scope of this paper, the opportunities provided by the virtual world platform Second Life to facilitate the learner autonomy in the process of foreign language learning will be discussed.
