Determining the Usage Situation of Children’s Games in Initial Literacy Teaching

This research is a qualitative study to determine the usage status of children’s games in initial literacy teaching process of primary school teachers. In this context, the research is a descriptive study. The research has been designed as a case study of qualitative research methods. The research was carried out with 20 primary school teachers working in Sakarya province in the 2014-2015 academic year. A 9-item semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers was used to collect data. The data were analyzed by using the content analysis method. As a result of this research, it was seen that class teachers preferred group games and technology supported games more than individual games. Among the difficulties encountered by the classroom teachers in the teaching of games in primary-literacy teaching, the inadequacy and disciplinary problems, the difficulty in obeying the rules, the inadequacy of the school facilities and the reasons arising from the individual differences of the students have come to the fore due to the crowded classrooms.
