The present study investigated prospective Turkish teachers’ levels of competence regarding the concept of value, which is a dimension of words. Value is a term that is outside the meanings of words and refers to their characteristics about use. The term, which was put forward by Saussure (1998), highlights small differences between the words that have the same meaning. Prospective Turkish teachers’ levels of awareness about value are expected to be developed. In this descriptive study, 370 prospective teachers studying at the department of Turkish Language Teaching at three different universities constituted the participants. Data were collected with the Test of Awareness Levels Regarding the Values of Words that was developed by the researchers. The gathered data were analyzed via the statistics program. In the research, participants’ awareness of the value of words was found low level. In addition, it was ascertained that participants’ awareness regarding the value of words did not significantly differ according to their sexes and grade levels. Yet, it was also determined that a difference came out according to the institutions they are studying at. Participants of Gaziantep University were found more successful compared to those of Mehmet Akif Ersoy University and Niğde University. Based on the results reached through the research study, it is recommended to carry out studies that focus on the value of words at the departments of Turkish Language Teaching.
