THE EFFECT OF THE PERCEIVED SOCIAL SUPPORT LEVEL ON THE SELF-ESTEEM IN GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILDREN

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the perceived social support level on self-esteem in the 3th, 4th and 5th grade students who were attending to the Antalya Science and Arts Education Centre. The study was carried out with 73 pupils (32 girls and 41 boys), during 2012-2013 academic year. Self Esteem Sub-Scale of Rosenberg Self Esteem Inventory which was adapted to Turkish by Çuhadaroğlu (1086) and Perceived Social Support Scale developed by Yıldırım (1997) were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed via linear regression and variance analysis to test whether the perceived social support scores of the students affected their self-esteem level or not. The results showed that self-esteem levels of the gifted and talented students were affected by the social support scores perceived from the parents while they were not affected by the social support scores perceived from the friends and from the teachers. Also, the self-esteem levels of the participants were affected by the perceived social support related to their mothers’ education levels and financial situations of the families. It was found that the perceived social support did not affect the self-esteem related to the fathers’ education levels and the gender of the students.
