Modal particles are important elements of German language and are mainly used in oral production of language. They have quite complex features, and thus they are rarely or never used by foreign language learners even if they have a high level of proficiency in the language. Even though it usually seems to be hard to acquire modal particles, they are an indispensable component of foreign language instruction because of their pragmatic functionality. In this study, modal particles used most frequently in spoken language are discussed, and the course books ‘Menschen B1’ and ‘Sicher!’ are evaluated in terms of the presentation of modal particles.  The purpose of the study is to reveal whether the explanations and exercises in these course books are sufficient to help students acquire modal particles successfully and to be used in spoken language. In the conclusion part of the study, some implications into the acquisition of modal particles are presented.
