Determination of Second Year Education Faculty Students’ Perceptions about the Concept of Women

This study aimed to determine the mental images of students in the Education Faculty about the concept of “woman.” The study employed phenomenological design, a qualitative research method, and was conducted with 296 students (107 male and 189 female) from the departments of Turkish, Social Studies, Science, Arts and Music Education. A total of 243 metaphors were created, with more metaphors developed by students from the Social Studies, Science and Turkish Education departments. The metaphors developed by the students were evaluated under six categories: living, authority, nature, object, abstract and attribution. The highest amount of metaphors was created in the attribution category, and the least was created in the living category. In the living category, all the metaphors except “bird” evoked negative meanings. In all categories, “mother,” “flower-rose” and “water” metaphors were common. Although most of the developed metaphors evoked positive meanings, the students assigned negative meanings in the description part, starting with the word “because.” The metaphors developed under the authority category evoked positive meanings; these described women as essential. Under the object category, the most developed metaphors were “food” and “book.” In this category, all metaphors except “cigarette” had positive meanings.
