Analysis of Elementary School Students’ Internet Cafe Usage in Respect to Different Variables

In Turkey, accessing to Internet via Internet cafes by minors aged under 15 is restricted by law. On the other hand, Internet cafes are highly appealing places for elementary students, who are subject to the restriction. This study has been conducted in order to understand for what purposes students have been using these environments in the last few years where Internet and Computer Technologies (ICT) accessibility at households has increased, the effect of gender on these purposes and parent control on access to Internet cafes. In this descriptive study, 90 elementary students from four different districts of Istanbul have been contacted at Internet cafes. These students, whose ages differ between 11 and 14, have been asked questions regarding their reasons to use Internet cafes, ICT accessibility at their homes, their school performances and restrictions to their access to Internet cafes by their families. Percentage, frequency and chi-square analyses have been made based on the data gathered. According to study results, students who attend Internet cafes have computers in their homes, have an Internet access rate of 75%, three out of four among them are male, they define their academic success as high or regular, have serious deficiencies concerning the usage of packaged software, inform their parents of their attendance to Internet cafe and are subject to one or more limitations with regard to Internet cafes. It is observed that students use Internet cafes not only for academic purposes, but also for entertainment and communication. However, of these purposes, Internet cafe usage rates for entertainment (gaming, watching movies etc.) shows a significant difference on the side of male students. Findings of the study show that students who have declared intensive parental control are on the opinion that Internet cafes have a positive effect on their academic success.
