German literary books which are assumed to be effective on the development of the reading skills of foreign language learners may cause some problems in application. The most significant one is the time spent for reading such books. Therefore, in this study, an application model which will eliminate such problems is being offered. Student views on the efficiency of the model comprise the data of the study. This research was conducted by the participation of first year students of German Language Teaching Department at Trakya University in 2006-2007 academic year. For 8 weeks, 41 literary books in German language were read by the subject group students. The findings indicate that the students have developed positive attitudes towards reading literary texts as a result of the method applied in the reading courses. It can be concluded that reading German literary books had positive effects on students' reading comprehension, language competence, cultural awareness, reader identity and their approaches to different text types.
