Abstract
Emotional development in the preschool period forms the foundation for social and academic skills that will last throughout life. Emotion socialization supports the development of a healthy self-concept and empathy by enabling parents to guide their children in recognizing, expressing, and regulating emotions. Accordingly, structured training programs for parents not only strengthen the parent-child relationship but also contribute to the healthy management of negative emotional experiences. In Turkey, existing cultural diversity, rapid social change, and variations in parenting approaches make it necessary to develop structured emotion socialization programs to support children’s healthy emotional development. However, the literature indicates that systematic emotion socialization programs targeting early childhood in Turkey are limited and insufficient in terms of prevalence. In this context, the aim of the present study is to determine the effectiveness of the “Parental Emotion Socialization Training Program” developed for parents of children aged 48–72 months. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, the “Pre-test–Post-test Control Group Experimental Design,” a quantitative research method, was employed. A total of 70 parents participated in the study, including 35 in the control group and 35 in the experimental group. The “Coping with Children’s Negative Emotions Scale (Parent Form)” was administered to both groups, and differences between pre-test and post-test mean scores determined the program’s effectiveness. The findings revealed that the program led to significant changes in parents’ emotion socialization behaviors. The meaningful and positive improvements observed in the experimental group after the program indicate that the “Parental Emotion Socialization Training Program” is generally effective.
